Hacktoberfest là thời điểm tuyệt vời để bước chân vào open-source AI, nhưng thực tế nhiều người mới bị cuốn vào việc "săn PR count" thay vì đóng góp thực sự. Từ kinh nghiệm review hàng trăm PR trên các repo AI/ML, có vài điều đáng lưu ý:
Chọn project phù hợp: Ưu tiên các repo có
good first issueđược gán rõ ràng, có maintainer hoạt động gần đây (check commit history 2-3 tuần qua), và quan trọng nhất — có documentation/setup guide đủ chi tiết để bạn reproduce môi trường local mà không phải hỏi lung tung. Nhiều repo AI có dependency phức tạp (CUDA version, Python version, model weights download) mà docs không cập nhật, gây mất thời gian cực lớn.Loại contribution có giá trị: Đừng chỉ fix typo hay update README. Với AI projects, các contribution thực tế thường là: thêm test case cho edge case (input rỗng, sequence quá dài, dtype mismatch), cải thiện logging/debuggability cho training pipeline, hoặc benchmark performance giữa các backend (CPU vs GPU vs quantized). Maintainer đánh giá cao PR kèm theo benchmark numbers hoặc reproduction script.
