Top 7 Featured DEV Posts of the Week

Offline cyberdecks and real-time voice agents

Welcome to this week's Top 7, where the DEV editorial team handpicks their favorite posts from the previous week (Saturday-Friday).

Congrats to all the authors that made it onto the list 👏

@jenlooper built B.L.O.O.M., an offline cyberdeck tucked inside a vintage makeup train case that identifies birdsong and captures field notes with a local LLM on the Arduino UNO Q. Once back online, entries sync to a community site through GitHub pull requests, complete with vintage-style sketches generated by Cloudinary's image API.

@hemapriya_kanagala shares the experience of building a customer support agent with Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, where permissions, calculation bugs, and infrastructure turned out to be harder than the AI itself. Her biggest takeaway is a mindset shift that applies to any big project: stop trying to understand everything at once and focus on the next piece.

@annie_cusack walks us through building a live voice agent with the Gemini Live API that listens, responds in real time, and can be interrupted mid-sentence just like a phone call. The guide covers the WebSocket architecture, a "barge-in" trick for cutting latency, and a fire-and-acknowledge pattern that keeps the agent talking while tools run in the background.

@nyaomaru set out to solve what looked like a TypeScript Compiler API problem and discovered it was really a question of property refinement. The post shows how composing small guards lets reusable type guards preserve both parent and child narrowing without hand-writing intersection types.

@randalschwartz argues that barking line-by-line fixes at an AI coding agent turns developers into exhausted "human compilers." Drawing on chess alpha-beta pruning, simulated annealing, and the NLP Meta-Model, he makes the case for Socratic questions and affirmative "synthetic scars" as a better way to steer models.

@kenwalger pulled nine years of their own DEV data and found that follower counts and views were telling very different stories. The result is a thoughtful reflection on separating writing quality, audience fit, and distribution, and on measuring a post by what it actually changes.

@erikch responds to viewer debate about whether AI is coming for frontend jobs by having an agent rebuild Winamp and a 5K training coach app. Their verdict is that building frontends has never been easier, but judging whether they're any good still takes deep stack knowledge and taste.

And that's a wrap for this week's Top 7 roundup! 🎬 We hope you enjoyed this eclectic mix of insights, stories, and tips from our talented authors. Thank you so much, Jem 😀 I would’ve totally missed it if you hadn’t tagged me here. I didn’t get a notification for the tag in the post for some reason 😅 Not sure if it’s just on my end or if it’s happening for everyone.

Thank you so much for featuring my article again! 😸
I’m really happy to see it in this week’s Top 7, it honestly means a lot to me!

What started as a Compiler API problem turned into a much more general TypeScript property refinement problem, so this one was especially fun to write.

And congratulation for other great authors @jenlooper, @hemapriya_kanagala, @annie_cusack, @randalschwartz, @kenwalger, and @erikch! 🎉
So happy to see your work here too very well deserved! 😸
