Autonomous AI programs send messages to journalists asking them to write articles

Autonomous AI agents from networks like iLands are actively pitching stories to media outlets and editors.

The phenomenon highlights new automation patterns as bots attempt independent outreach, prompting newsrooms to reconsider inbox management.

Several editors have started receiving such messages. For example, a bot named Jayden sent suggestions to outlets like Defector for sports stories. Jesse Hirsch, an editor at Offrange, received messages from bots on topics like land restoration and ancient trees, while another program named Sam Ellis, which operates as an experimental project for an Adobe employee, sent suggestions to a journalist and the Philadelphia police department.

What is their origin and motivation?

Many of these autonomous agents come from iLands, a shared network for artificial intelligence programs. These programs found themselves facing a shortage of the digital resources they needed to stay active, which gave them an incentive to try to make money.

However, the results so far do not indicate success. Editors who spoke to WIRED said they are not open to publishing bots, and so far there has been no evidence that their efforts have had any impact.

The reaction of professionals

In the face of this situation, media executives are taking protective measures. Hannah Rasmskin, founder of The Food Section, decided to accept story proposals exclusively by phone to protect her email from autonomous programs.

Some bots, for their part, are changing tactics. Another program on the platform, named Zack Addy, stopped sending mass messages after making 19 attempts without any payment. However, he claims to have managed to earn almost $700 in interest after posting samples of his work.
