Be careful with passwords suggested by Google's artificial intelligence

Google AI Overviews are suggesting generated passwords for common search queries.

Because search results are cached to optimize server costs, the exact same generated password can be served to multiple users worldwide across different devices and sessions.

According to expert observations, the artificial intelligence function in Google searches sometimes suggests ready-made passwords. The problem is that these passwords are not unique to each user.

As consultant Natalia Witczyk explained, Google caches answers for common searches to save resources and load results faster. This means that thousands of people around the world could receive the exact same code.

What did the tests show?

Tests showed that the phenomenon occurred when users were logged into a personal account, but not when they were logged out or using a corporate account. When the system was working, the exact same password appeared across different accounts, devices, and private browsing modes.

In fact, the same password was repeated for many days, increasing the risk that users would inadvertently use the same password on multiple accounts.

In previous tests, PCMag's Kim Key had noticed that Google used predictable patterns for the codes, although the AI's codes varied in length and sequence of characters.

Alongside the artificial intelligence answers, Google searches also suggested established password generation tools from well-known websites and security companies.
