Cinnamon 6.8 released with security and stability improvements

Cinnamon 6.8 is now available, featuring native trackpad gesture support for Wayland and Xorg, along with refined network management for Wi-Fi and VPNs.

The release addresses a CWE-78 vulnerability and improves integration with PAM, Polkit, and the Secret portal.

Developers and users will also benefit from fixes to shadow rendering freezes and enhanced IBus compatibility.

Better handling and new features

Users can now use gestures on their trackpad, both on Wayland-based and Xorg-based systems. An option has been added to the window management menu that allows a window to always remain “on top” of others.

Changes were also made to audio settings, making selecting playback devices easier, while the network management tool now correctly groups VPN and WireGuard connections.

Wi-Fi and stability fixes

The management of Wi-Fi wireless networks has been significantly improved. The system no longer displays duplicate network entries, and it better recognizes modern security standards, such as WPA3 and OWE.

The developers also fixed an issue that could cause the desktop to freeze in some cases when rendering shadows on windows. In addition, issues related to using the keyboard via IBus were fixed.

Security and certification systems

The new version includes a major security fix that closes a vulnerability that could be used to execute commands by third parties. In addition, the environment's cooperation with core system services that manage user passwords and access rights has been improved.

It is noted that the OpenSearch search provider has been removed from the new version. Cinnamon 6.8 will be part of Linux Mint 27, codenamed "Adrien", which is expected to be released around Christmas 2026.
