Garena launched Free Fire India for Android and iOS, introducing local data hosting, parental controls, and spending limits years after the original app's ban.
Garena has released a new, specially designed version called Free Fire India, available for Android and iOS devices. This version includes content tailored to Indian data, parental control tools, as well as limits on play time and purchases, while user data is stored in locations within the country.
The previous ban and the alternative version
The game was banned in February 2022 along with 53 other apps. Despite the ban on the original version, an improved variant of the game, Free Fire MAX, remained available in the country.
Garena had initially announced Free Fire India in September 2023, but quietly postponed its launch. According to Vaibhav Das Mudra, Garena's head of operations in India, Free Fire MAX will continue to operate as normal alongside the new version, allowing players to use the same account across both games.
Cooperation with authorities
The company said it worked closely with the relevant Indian authorities and incorporated their feedback before releasing the game. Data shows that the popularity of the game series remains high in the country, surpassing other popular titles on the market.
