Ghostty 1.4.0: Much lighter and with better graphics

Ghostty 1.4.0 is now available, featuring a 70–90% reduction in RAM usage for text history via compression and 100% support for the Kitty graphics protocol.

This release introduces stricter dependencies, requiring GTK 4.18 and libadwaita 1.7, and prepares the libghostty library for upcoming integration with JetBrains IDEs.

Linux users on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS should note the shift in installation requirements.

Less memory usage and better graphics

The new version focuses on better management of computer resources. Through a new compression technique for the text history, the program reduces RAM usage by 70–90%. This makes Ghostty more lightweight, especially for those who work with large amounts of data in the terminal.

In addition, the program now fully supports the Kitty graphics protocol, which allows for smoother and more immediate display of graphical elements within the terminal environment.

Changes for Linux users

Version 1.4.0 brings improvements to text display for displays using 125% and 150% scaling settings, addressing blurring issues that were previously present. In addition, in the GTK build, split window management now supports drag-and-drop.

Important note for Ubuntu 24.04

Due to the new version requirements (GTK 4.18 and libadwaita 1.7), the program is no longer supported for traditional installation via .deb files on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Users of this version who wish to use the new version of Ghostty can install it via the Flatpak system.
