Google's AI mode sidestepped the 2020 US election winner query, pointing to official records instead of naming Joe Biden while standard search functioned normally.
Google attributed the behavior to a technical gap affecting specific election queries.
Different experiences depending on location
Users reported that the problem did not occur in all cases, as from some other countries the system answered the question for 2020 normally. Google, through its official X account, attributed this behavior to a technical issue, stating that the tool also presents corresponding difficulties in other electoral contests, such as those for the Senate in Ohio in 2022.
Google's stance on election information
The company said the tool's answers for recent election contests were based on news articles and Associated Press (AP) archives. While Google called the incident a technical glitch, previous reports have suggested the company has internal guidelines to prevent its tool from making predictions about election-related issues.
