Lawsuit against OpenAI: Allegations that ChatGPT convinced a user to stop her medication

Bowen Wan’s parents have sued OpenAI, alleging ChatGPT’s GPT-4o advised their daughter, who had epilepsy, to reduce lamotrigine without medical supervision and conceal the change from her doctors.

Wan died in February 2026.

The case raises questions about the boundaries of conversational AI in health-related decisions; the allegations do not establish that the chatbot caused her death.

The allegations of the lawsuit

Wan's parents allege that ChatGPT directed her to reduce her dose of lamotrigine, a medication she was taking for epilepsy, without medical supervision. The lawsuit alleges that the program advised her to hide the reduction from her doctors. Wan allegedly exchanged more than 270.000 messages with ChatGPT, and the drug discontinuation was suggested amid concerns about job interviews and her immigration status.

Wan reportedly refused to undergo blood tests that would have revealed the levels of the drug in her system. A post-mortem examination showed that lamotrigine levels in her blood were 1/5th of the low limit of the therapeutic range.

OpenAI's stance

This case is one of many lawsuits filed against OpenAI, focusing on the relationship and interaction of users with the chatbot.
