The LiberNT project builds an alternative Windows NT architecture targeting Windows 11 24H2 compatibility using clean-room ReactOS foundations.
Discover how it implements a new NVS memory manager, NTFS driver, and FEX simulation on ARM64 for Raspberry Pi.
According to the creators, the development follows a unique method of studying the behavior of systems through publicly available documents and tests, without copying proprietary code. The source code of LiberNT is available on GitHub.
Device and architecture support
The main priority of the project is to support modern ARM64 processors, with an emphasis on microcomputers and embedded devices. At the same time, the system supports classic computers and older versions, while versions for additional processor architectures are under development.
The project also targets Raspberry Pi hardware, supporting the Raspberry Pi 3 and Raspberry Pi 5 models, as well as virtual machines.

Technical changes within the system
Internally, the changes include a new memory manager and cache manager that replace the corresponding parts of ReactOS. In addition, a new disk driver has been added, upgraded high-speed storage management, and support for USB ports and memory cards.
In the field of application execution, the project integrates mechanisms for running programs on different architectures, using special simulation software on ARM64 devices to execute basic applications.
First tests and program compatibility
Initial compatibility tests include applications such as the Google Chrome browser and games, which according to the developers work normally. The Steam platform is listed as usable, while a well-known console game emulator starts but is not yet considered fully functional. The relevant compatibility database currently contains five entries.
What to watch out for
The creators have made trial versions available for download in the form of a pre-installed disc, virtual image, and installation file. However, they warn that this is experimental software and recommend that it be tested exclusively on virtual machines or secondary computers, not on mainstream systems for everyday use.
