Lower tones from Anthropic on artificial intelligence in biology

AI company Anthropic acknowledged its lack of physical experimentation experience in an IPO filing, noting that its life sciences expansion will require handling hazardous materials, operating lab equipment, and navigating lengthy regulatory pathways.

In recent years, Anthropic CEO Dario Amondei has publicly argued that AI could achieve centuries of advances in biology in a matter of years and has predicted that most human diseases could be cured within the next decade. In September, the company also touted the discovery of a new enzyme from its system that resembled familiar gene-editing tools.

Despite these ambitions, the new filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission suggests a more realistic approach. Anthropic admits that it has no experience in physical experiments and that its expansion into healthcare will require activities outside of its historical software company.

That means the company will have to handle potentially hazardous materials, operate laboratory equipment and follow strict rules and regulations. In addition, the company has been more cautious about its enzyme discovery, saying it may have the potential to become a biotechnology tool, even though independent researchers have previously expressed doubts about its value.

The document shows that Anthropic now sees biological research as a core part of its business model, rather than simply providing digital tools to third parties. However, it acknowledges that the drugs that may emerge from these efforts face lengthy, costly and uncertain processes and regulations, and may never bring in revenue.
