Rocky Linux Creator Unveils Ginux, a Kernel Built on Artificial Intelligence

Gregory Kurtzer unveiled Ginux, an experimental OS kernel written in Rust and built with AI assistance over 11 days.

It implements its own scheduler, memory management, and Linux ABI compatibility layer to run unmodified Linux applications directly on x86-64 hardware.

Unlike traditional operating systems, Ginux features a completely independent kernel designed to run Linux applications without relying on the classic Linux kernel at all.

How it was created in a few days

The development was based on a method where the creator provided the directions and architecture, while an artificial intelligence system took over the writing of the code.

According to the project data, the artificial intelligence system produced approximately 139.000 lines of code that were ultimately retained and used within those 11 days.

Despite its very short lifespan, Ginux has its own systems for memory management, task control, networking, and device support. It can be booted directly on computers with a suitable architecture without the need for another operating system.

Features and compatibility

The experimental system was able to run selected applications from other popular distributions, such as Alpine Linux and Rocky Linux, without any changes to their code. It was also able to boot into the Rocky Linux 10 system environment.

In terms of Linux compatibility, Ginux supports hundreds of system commands, with some fully functional, others partially functional, and some deliberately excluded for architectural reasons.

A research prototype

The creator makes it clear that Ginux remains strictly a research prototype and is not intended for use in real services or production.

The main purpose of the project was to evaluate whether programmers can guide artificial intelligence to build complex software systems at extremely fast speeds.

The project is openly available to everyone on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 license.
