University of Kentucky administrator David Durman secured a religious exemption to opt out of workplace AI use with support from the American Humanist Association, raising ongoing discussions around AI integration and workplace accommodations.
David Durman, an administrative officer at the University of Kentucky and a follower of secular humanism, managed to secure official protection from his employer so that he would not be required to use artificial intelligence tools.
Durman argues that artificial intelligence reduces critical thinking, threatens professions, has high environmental costs, and endangers human creativity.
With the help of the American Humanist Association, Durman became the first humanist to secure such professional protection for this reason, inspired by Erin Maus, a software engineer who had achieved something similar in the past.
