The Garden I Wait for Every Winter

Shubhra Pokhariya on October 18, 2026

October always makes me look at my garden a little differently. The monsoon is beginning to fade, the mornings are changing, and I'm already think...

A few years ago, my wife and I bought a 3,300-square-meter plot of land with a small wooden house in the middle—about a 1.5-hour drive from our rental apartment. So, while the potential is there, we only manage to get out there occasionally; we’ve wanted to fix up the little house, but every visit ends up turning into gardening work instead. Out there, I completely forget about programming or any other kind of IT work.

That sounds like such a lovely place to have! I hope you and your wife get to fix up the little house and make it your home soon. It must be wonderful to have all that space to enjoy nature, and I can imagine how easily a visit turns into a whole day of gardening! 😊 I hope you get to spend more and more time there together, until one day you can enjoy your garden every day without having to drive back to your rental apartment. 🌱🏡

Music is such a good way to unwind! 😊 Do you play an instrument, or do you mostly enjoy listening?

@technogamerz Thank you so much for sharing the song 😊

@shubhradev
Thanks for checking out the song 😊
I like listening to songs a lot. But, not good with instruments 😀
I recently started writing.
No matter what our mood is, music just fixes it, even for just a few moments, it takes us into a different world!

I am a bit lazy with gardening, so I will just cheer you guys for all the hard work 😄

i usually have a mellow folk playlist while pruning winter vines, what songs set the mood for you when you're in the garden?

This was such a lovely read, Shubhra! It is wonderful to see how you visualized your gardening plan and how things would be like when the plants finally grow. It's amazing how one can appreciate a creation that comes through hard work despite the fact that it might not look like what you expected.

I especially loved what you said at the end about how not everything has to become a lesson. I think sometimes we get so caught up in being productive and constantly learning or building something that we forget how nice it is to just enjoy doing something for the sake of it.

And now I kind of want to go plant something! Thanks for sharing this little glimpse into something you love. It was a refreshing change of pace from all the usual tech content!

Thank you so much, Jessica! 🥹🌿 I'm so glad that part resonated with you. I think we all need little things in life that we can simply enjoy, without feeling the need to learn something from them or make them productive. Gardening reminds me of that in the loveliest way. And now I really hope you do go plant something! 😊 Even a little pot of something green can bring so much joy. Thank you for reading and sharing such a lovely comment!

"I enjoy picturing all of that before I start planting" - you're not just a software architect, but a "garden architect", envisioning the structures and patterns before you (literally) get your hands dirty!

"For this I like the thriller, filler, and spiller approach" - that's one of those "patterns" you use as a "garden architect" - good example ...

I love plants too, but I don't think I'm as good in creating a "well behaved" garden - mine just quickly starts looking like a jungle!

Thank you so much, Leob! 😊 A jungle garden has its own charm! I do keep rearranging my pots, but I think the plants always end up having the final say.

The pot that looks balanced at planting and crowded a few weeks later was the detail that caught my attention. With the thriller, filler, and spiller approach, are you picturing the arrangement at its mature size, or choosing something you already expect to rearrange as it grows? Those seem like two different kinds of enjoyment: watching a plan fill out, and discovering combinations you couldn't have planned. I'd like to hear about a pairing that surprised you enough to keep it.

I do think about how the plants will grow, but I also enjoy trying different arrangements! 😊 In my winter garden, I often grow plants like alyssum and petunias in smaller pots and place them inside my larger pots or grow bags to add that spiller effect. It lets me bring in more colour and make the garden look fuller, and the sweet fragrance of alyssum makes it even more lovely. 🌸 I’ve tried different arrangements with other plants, too. I enjoy playing around with colours, heights, and textures and seeing how they look together. Sometimes, a little rearranging is part of the fun!

Beautifully said. The comparison between code structure and garden design is interesting but your point about how gardening enforces the patience constraint that coding typically doesn't is even better. A very nice observation that not everything can be made better through optimization and that sometimes the best thing to do is simply stop trying to optimize.

Thank you, Gabriel! 😊 I’m glad that part resonated with you. Gardening has a way of reminding me that not everything follows our plans or can be rushed. Sometimes, we just need to give things time to grow and enjoy the process instead of trying to make everything better.

Wow, your initiatives are truly amazing! I really loved them.🔥 I won’t be able to grow anything during the winter, but when I go to my farm in Jaisalmer, I’ll definitely plant 100 trees there, even if the government doesn’t provide us with enough water.

It really is! 😊 Planning the garden is exciting, but getting to watch everything grow and enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables makes it even more special. There’s something so lovely about eating what you’ve grown yourself! 🌱 I can’t wait to see how my winter garden turns out either!
