r/startpages Is the Most Underrated Firefox Community You're Not Using

If you care about what happens when you open a new browser tab, you should know about r/startpages.

35,000+ members who post screenshots of their custom browser start pages. Pixel-perfect homepages built from scratch. New tab extensions reviewed and compared.

But most Firefox extension developers never post there.

Who's on r/startpages

The community is mostly:

  • Front-end developers who built their own HTML startpages
  • Privacy-focused users who want weather/time/bookmarks without the noise
  • Firefox power users who treat the new tab page as a productivity surface

The dark mode preference is overwhelming. In most r/startpages posts, 80%+ of the screenshots use dark themes.

Weather is the most-requested widget. Almost every post that doesn't have a weather widget gets a comment asking for one.

What they actually want

I built Weather & Clock Dashboard after reading dozens of r/startpages posts. The recurring complaints were:

  1. Custom startpages are beautiful but require ongoing maintenance
  2. Weather widgets need API keys and break when APIs change
  3. World clocks are hard to add to static HTML setups
  4. Existing extensions are either too heavy (React-based) or too minimal (no weather)

My extension solves all four. It uses Open-Meteo — a fully free, no-API-key-needed weather service — so nothing breaks.

The r/startpages audience is different from r/firefox

r/firefox users want extensions that solve problems. r/startpages users want extensions that look right. They care about:

  • Does it have dark mode? (yes — one-click toggle)
  • Does it load fast? (yes — <100ms, pure HTML/CSS/JS)
  • Can I see the source? (yes — GitHub, MIT licensed)
  • Does it phone home? (no — your city is stored locally only)

If you're building Firefox extensions

Post to r/startpages. The community is smaller than r/firefox (35k vs 980k) but the members are more engaged with new tab functionality specifically.

Their feedback loop is also fast — you'll know within 24 hours whether your extension fits their aesthetic standards.
