The 14, then 38, then 112. Leo dismissed that first fourteen before something made him pull them back, and that's the honest detail. Fourteen sat under his threshold. What made him look was the volume, which means the campaign exposed itself by being big enough to notice.
That's the stratagem eating its own tail. False blossoms exist to inflate apparent scale, and scale is precisely what draws an eye. Had it stopped at fourteen, or added one identity a fortnight, it would still be sitting in the noise where he first left it.
The certificate point is the one I'd hand to anyone building automated checks. All 164 certificates are real. Each one validates. The forgery isn't in any certificate, it's in the set, and no check that validates them one at a time can see it. You'd have to compare across the batch, and almost nothing does that by default.
Which is an uncomfortable shape. The thing passes every test you run, because the tests run on the wrong unit.
And Lena's line lands harder the second time through. Her sample and his batch aren't the same lineage. So either two operators, or one operator running two signing systems. #28 flagged the actor question, and this doesn't resolve it. It widens it.

@ndcodes Hahaha honestly, we’re already at stratagem #29, and I’m actually a little sad this series is coming to an end. Back when I first started, I could pump out one chapter every single day nonstop. I really appreciate this deep close reading; I think every storyteller gets this warm feeling at moments like this.
Leo has the least amount of information among the six main characters right now. But his technical drive and competitive streak make up for a lot of what he’s missing. To him, ACL feels more like an opponent he’s competing against. Lena makes great use of that dynamic 😂 It’s almost like a queen commanding her knight.
We’ll hold off on revealing the attacker for the final six chapters. These are the last six stratagems of the Thirty-Six Stratagems, so let’s wait and see what unfolds.

Hahaha I’d stay humble on most topics, but when it comes to Chinese characters I have to be proud! 🤣You’re absolutely right. Each Chinese character packs a huge amount of information, almost like a compressed archive, and they can be freely combined. Roughly 3,000 commonly used characters are enough to describe nearly everything in the world.
English has this issue of disconnected word roots. Take the word “牛” as an example. In Chinese: 水牛, 黄牛, 牛肉 — all contain the character for 牛. Pair it with another character, and you instantly get the meaning. But in English, buffalo, ox, beef are totally unrelated words. They’re just coined separately, adding extra overhead for learners. Hahaha🤣

“164 identities, one root” is a great way to describe a mistake we make surprisingly often in real systems: counting identities and assuming we’re counting independent actors.
IPs change. Hostnames change. Certificates change. Infrastructure can be deliberately noisy. But behavioral fingerprints — timing, traversal patterns, retry behavior, operational rhythm — are much harder to disguise consistently.
My favorite moment was actually Leo not pressing Submit.
The evidence supported the easy explanation, but he stopped and asked whether two different realities could produce the same dashboard. That tiny hesitation is probably more valuable than half the security tools we buy. 😂
Also loved the separation in the postmortem:
Observation → Inference → Open questions.
Security investigations become dangerous when those three get mixed together. “We observed X” quietly turns into “therefore actor Y did Z,” and five meetings later everyone remembers the inference as evidence.
