Calibre 9.17 is released, featuring faster ebook conversion speeds for MOBI and AZW3, native JPEG XL image support, and accessibility label checks.
The update also includes regression fixes for PDF and EPUB 3 conversions, dark mode readability tweaks, and content server fixes.
The free, open-source app now offers faster file compression when converting books to formats like MOBI, AZW3, and PDB. The new version can also read JPEG XL images inside e-books during conversions.
The update also brings accessibility improvements, as the app respects device settings for reduced motion, while the built-in book checker now checks accessibility tags and automatically updates them if an identifier changes. Minor changes were also made to the AI adventure game included in the app, automatically adjusting the creator and publication date when creating catalogs.
In terms of fixes, the new version resolves issues with PDF and EPUB file conversions in the previous version, fixes issues with covers on older reader software, and ensures that saving a custom series with the same number is done correctly. In addition, text search again searches libraries without book files, and colors in dark mode are made more readable. Book data sources from Amazon and Google Images now use camoufox.

Improvements have also been made to the way the part of the app that allows users to view their library from another device works. Text search now only applies to the library being viewed, the correct books are displayed when switching between libraries, and the app notifies about conversions made from there.
Finally, support for automatically downloading news from well-known sources, such as The Economist, Associated Press, and Scientific American, has been updated.
Calibre is free, open-source software that runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and is available from its official website or through unofficial releases on Flathub and Snapcraft.
