Canonical’s Launchpad now supports bug tracking for personal package archives (PPAs).
Maintainers can opt-in to let users report issues against specific packages or entire PPAs, isolating experimental software feedback from standard Ubuntu repositories.
Why the new feature is useful
These types of repositories often offer newer or more experimental versions of programs than the official Ubuntu options. Until now, a bug report could confuse the situation by incorrectly appearing to affect the official, stable version of the program.
With the new addition, repository creators can choose whether they want to accept reports for the entire repository, for a specific program within it, or even for a specific version of Ubuntu.
How it works in practice
For example, as Canonical's Ilker Emre Koç demonstrated using a test application on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, users can now submit the report directly to the specific repository. This allows repository maintainers to more easily identify and fix bugs, saving time on reports that do not concern the main release of the software.
