Linux Lite 8.2 released with gaming options and new kernel

Linux Lite 8.2 lands as a minor update built on Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS with Xfce and Linux kernel 7.3, featuring custom variants, CachyOS patches, an optional full-preemption gaming kernel, and installer fixes.

The options for the system kernel

Linux Lite 8.2 is based on Ubuntu 26.04.1 and uses the Xfce desktop environment with LightDM. The main change is the integration of the Linux 7.3 kernel, which comes with custom builds and fixes.

Users can choose between two different kernel versions depending on their needs:

  • Basic core: It is intended for everyday use, emphasizing security and smooth computer operation.
  • Core for games: An optional option that removes some security measures and prioritizes response speed for demanding games.

The different options are managed through the updated Lite Kernel Manager tool, which includes speed testing and operating file export capabilities.

Improvements to programs and installation

Lite Driver Manager has been updated to prevent the selection of incompatible programs for NVIDIA graphics cards, protecting the system from problems. In addition, issues with the installer related to encrypted disks, cache management, and boot configuration have been fixed.

How to upgrade

The new operating system is available in a 2,4 gigabyte ISO file format from download websites.

Those already using version 8.0 can upgrade directly from the system settings menu, selecting the corresponding path. This process does not automatically replace the installed kernel, which remains as is unless the user chooses to change it themselves.
