Explore how AI avatar radio host Coyotec was built using tools like Claude Haiku, ElevenLabs, OpenAI, and Midjourney for LA's José 97.5 FM, detailing its syndication and technical integration across regional radio markets.

José 97.5 FM in Los Angeles launched Coyote, a digital character who debuted in September 2025, airing only on weekends. Coyote quickly won over audiences with his warm tone, jokes, and way of talking about everyday life, music, immigrant rights, and social issues.

Today, the digital presenter hosts the show Al Aire y Sin Permiso alongside real-life producer and announcer Geraldine Guzmán. Their collaboration proved so popular that the show expanded to five new territories in California, Nevada, and Texas.

The audience figures showed a significant increase, mainly among younger ages, with young listeners showing great interest in the combination of people and technology on the radio.

How the digital producer was built

Coyote was created by radio company Entravision. Known artificial intelligence programs such as Claude Haiku, OpenAI, and ChatGPT were used to compose the texts and responses, while a digital audio playback service was used for his voice and a graphics creation tool for the images.

His human collaborator helped correct the accent and give the character a more familiar tone, so that he sounds like a relative from the neighborhoods of Mexico and Los Angeles. According to company executives, the goal is to provide information and companionship to listeners, using technology for entertainment.

Reflections and reactions

Despite the success of the venture, the use of artificial intelligence in the media also brings concerns. Some professionals in the field express fears that digital voices may replace humans in the workplace.

At the same time, there are voices that point out ethical issues. However, the radio company's managers respond that their own use is limited to creating entertainment content for the public.
