Discover Shader Effects, a new GNOME Shell extension that applies GPU-accelerated visual filters to Linux desktops and individual windows.
Learn how it implements customizable CRT glow, scan lines, and bloom effects across GNOME 48 through 51.
The add-on is called Shader Effects and it allows users to apply various effects, such as scanlines, glows, and old green screen effects. The effects can be applied either to the entire desktop or selectively to a specific window, such as a window running text applications.
Possibilities and limitations
The tool's settings allow you to adjust the intensity, movement speed, and refresh rate. However, using them can increase power consumption on laptops. Users also can't combine multiple effects at once, and the plugin can be easily turned on and off directly from the top bar.
Who can use it?
Shader Effects is available from the official GNOME add-ons website. It supports GNOME versions 48 to 51, which means that Ubuntu 26.04 LTS or later is required to run it.
