SuperTuxKart and other major platforms took systems offline following exploit attempts tied to PHP2Shell.
The project is entirely rebuilding its server in Python without AI assistance, expecting a full security audit before migrating existing accounts.
The threat, known as PHP2Shell, has also led other organizations, including Wikimedia, DeviantArt, and government websites, to shut down their systems for security reasons. According to the game's creators, attack attempts were recorded on October 17, four days before the problem was publicly known.
Although the game's mainframe was not compromised, the team decided to shut it down as a precaution. The system was found to be running an older version of the code, and a security firm that reviewed the situation recommended that it be rewritten from scratch rather than being put back into service.
What affects the closure?
Due to the outage, players are temporarily unable to:

Next steps and fundraising
The game's developers decided to rebuild the system from scratch using a different programming language, without the help of artificial intelligence. The new version is expected to take several weeks to complete, and will undergo a rigorous security review before accounts can be transferred.
To help complete the effort, the creators started a fundraiser with a goal of $4.000. A security company agreed to double the effort by offering equivalent hours of technical work.
Finally, the creators recommend that those who have used the same password on other services change it immediately.
